Research

Undergraduate research thesis, Federal University of Technology, Minna, April 2023

Comparative Analysis of Microstructure and Hardness Properties in the Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) of a Single-Run and Double-Run Weldments

Compared the microstructure and hardness of the heat-affected zone in single-run and double-run mild steel weldments. The section bands across this site borrow the specimen's anatomy: base metal, the heat-affected zone beside the weld, and the weld metal itself.

  1. base metalMild steel
  2. heat-affected zoneWhere hardness and grain structure were compared
  3. weld metalShielded metal arc welds, one run or two

259 HLDAverage HAZ hardness, double-run weldment

248 HLDAverage HAZ hardness, single-run weldment

Findings

  • The number of welding runs affected HAZ hardness and grain structure.
  • Average HAZ hardness was 259 HLD for the double-run weldment and 248 HLD for the single-run weldment.
  • The double-run weldment showed finer grains in the HAZ than the single-run weldment.
Methods
Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), Metallographic sample preparation, Grinding, Polishing, Etching, Optical microscopy, Leeb hardness testing
