Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) Weldments in Mild Steel Using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

This undergraduate thesis investigates the microstructural changes and mechanical property variations in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of mild steel specimens welded using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. The study examines how welding parameters — including heat input, electrode type, and cooling rate — influence the grain structure, hardness distribution, tensile strength, and impact toughness across the weld metal, HAZ, and base metal regions. Metallographic analysis using optical microscopy and mechanical testing were employed to characterise specimens at varying welding conditions. Findings contribute to the understanding of structural integrity in mild steel weld joints relevant to construction and manufacturing.
